Public Notice of Precinct Reduction Proposal

This notice is being published in accordance with WV Code 7-3-1. The Monroe County Commission is
proposing to reduce the number of voting precincts here in the county from 18 to 11 . This proposal is
being considered due to the following reasons; some of the voting precincts have no indoor restrooms
and need renovations and are not handicap accessible, poll workers are getting harder and harder to
recruit, and approximately 30% to 40% of the county’s voters are now taking advantage of Early Voting.
This proposal can be viewed here on the map or by visiting the county’s website at
http//www.monroecountywv.gov. Copies of the proposal will also be available in the County Clerk’s Office at
the Courthouse in Union. The County Commission will take action on this proposal at their January 5,
2022 regular meeting. If the proposal is adopted, those voters affected by this precinct reduction
proposal will be notified by mail and advised of your new precinct and the location of such precinct.
Such proposal, if approved, will be effective with the May 10, 2022 Primary Election.
Below is a summary of the proposal. You will need to refer to the map and find your residence (or the
area of the county you live) to determine if your voting precinct has changed or contact the County
Clerk’s Office at 772-3096.

  • Precinct #1 Alderson Corp. will consist of the voters located in the town limits of Alderson.
  • Precinct # 2 Alderson will consist of voters living in the outlying areas of Alderson, Sinks Grove
    and Wolf Creek.
  • Precinct # 14 Union, will consist of voters previously registered in Precinct #12, Union Board

  • Precinct #17 Lindside, will consist of voters previously registered in Precinct #32 Lindside and
    Precinct #23 Rock Camp.

Notice of Changes of County’s Magisterial District Boundary Lines

After each Census, the County Commission must review the population numbers in each of the County’s three Magisterial Districts to assure they are as equal in population as is possible. The difference in the population in the three districts cannot be more than 5% plus or minus. After the 2010 Census Monroe County had a population of 13,502. According to the 2020 Census, the population dropped to 12,376, a loss of 1,126 people. Therefore, the current Magisterial Districts had to be realigned. The Monroe County Commission is proposing to change the Magisterial Districts as noted on the map below. After making such changes, the population in each district is as follows; Eastern: 4,119, Central: 4,064 and Western: 4,178. Magisterial Districts are very important as the county elects one individual from each district to make up the County Commission, and Board of Education members are also elected according to the Magisterial Districts they reside in. The County Commission will take action on this proposal at their January 5, 2022 regular session meeting. If approved, these boundary line changes will be in effect for the May 10, 2022 Primary Election.
